Writing Points:
• We need your help protecting mariculture and the Drakes Bay Oyster Farm in Point Reyes National Seashore.
• I want shellfish farming, processing and retail to remain indefinitely in Drakes Estero and I want this clearly identified in the new PRNS General Management Plan. Please help us make this happen.
• Evidence that the Seashore adminstration has lied about the science, saying the oyster farm damages the estero and harms harbor seals when their own reports show the opposite, has destroyed our trust in their ability to manage this area without your congressional intervention. • The Seashore administration has chosen the year 2012 to take this prime, and irreplaceable aquaculture facility permanently out of production. I am disturbed that this, California Department of Fish and Game's largest shellfish lease and highest quality shellfish-producing waters, could become a casualty of ill-formed Park policy.
• The Drakes Bay Oyster Farm epitomizes the sustainable farming we need in these times of growing food insecurity and global environmental crisis. The oyster farm uses no feeds, fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics, tillage or pesticides, and produces 10 times more protein per acre than a typical land-based livestock farm. The oysters filter Drake's Estero's waters, helping maintain its unparalleled quality and sustain its biodiversity.
• The oyster farm has been active for nearly 100 years, is home to the last operating oyster cannery in California, represents 85% of Marin County's shellfish growing area, and has the County's only shellfish hatchery. As the Seashore's sole oyster farm, it is not only a key visitor destination point, but a valuable educational and research farm for San Francisco Bay area schools and universities.
• There is nothing in any past legislation that prevents the National Park Service from giving the Oyster Farm an extended lease. No protected area of the Park System are placed in jeopardy by doing so.
